Identification of sustainability-related programs from the perspective of strategic actors at UPAEP, Puebla, Mexico

Efforts towards transitioning to a sustainable university exist at Universidad Popular Autónoma del Estado de Puebla (UPAEP). However, little is known within the university community about the programs that can be considered sustainable. Additionally, this concept is perceived solely from an ecological/environmental dimension, which hinders its conceptual appropriation for a comprehensive, participatory, and socialized transition process. Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine the programs -according to the perspective of strategic actors at UPAEP (decision-makers at different levels and with substantive functions of the university)- related to one or more of the following axes: poverty reduction, social inclusion and gender perspective, health promotion and well-being, mitigation of the impact of natural resource use, and strategic alliances to achieve these purposes. The process involved semi-structured interviews and desk research. The results revealed the existence of three main programs identified by the majority of participants, which have an impact on the aforementioned axes. These programs are part of the institutional identity and university model of UPAEP, highlighting the importance of communicating and socializing their impact and how they contribute to sustainable development.
