Experiences of certified teacher evaluators in Mexico. Reflections on the evaluation of teachers’ performance

Since 2013, a large-scale educational reform was undertaken in Mexico, emphasizing on the improvement of educational quality through teacher evaluation processes, which would regulate entry, promotion, recognition and permanence in elementary and secondary education. The objective of this article is to reflect on the experiences of some primary and secondary education teachers who served as evaluators in the process implemented by the institutions in charge of evaluating educational quality in our country, having met the requirements to certify in teacher performance evaluation. This article is about collecting those experiences that account for one of the educational reforms that was undertaken in 2013 and that was eliminated with the reform of the third constitutional article in 2019. For this, in-depth interviews were
conducted with 10 teacher evaluators from the states of Chiapas, Yucatan, Coahuila and Veracruz. These experiences serve as a basis for presenting proposals to guide teacher evaluation processes, based on the advantages and disadvantages observed by teacher evaluators, who were also in service and in the middle of one of the most controversial processes in Mexican education. Some aspects analyzed are topics such
as: motivation, coordination between authorities, ethics in the evaluation of their peers and the learning achieved in the process.
